La Leche League GB introduces 3 new publications Caesarean Birth and Breastfeeding, Supporting a Breastfeeding Mother and My Baby Needs More Milk

Nottingham, UK (PRWEB) April 2, 2009-- La Leche League GB (http://www.laleche.org.uk/) is pleased to announce the publication of the new information sheets:

Caesarean Birth and Breastfeeding (http://www.lllgbbooks.co.uk/shopping/go_shopping/booklets_and_information_sheets/tear_off_pads_of_information_sheets/caesarean_birth_and_breastfeeding_-_pad_of_50/)

Breastfeeding completes the normal, natural cycle of pregnancy, labour and birth. During pregnancy a mother's body is preparing to give birth and her breasts are getting ready to feed her baby. A caesarean birth interferes with these natural processes and may make establishing breastfeeding more of a challenge. However, many mums do successfully breastfeed after a caesarean birth.

Not only is breastfeeding the normal, natural and healthy way to feed a baby--it can give a mum who has experienced a caesarean birth renewed confidence in her body's abilities. The close physical contact can also help her feel better emotionally. Breastfeeding helps the womb to contract, resulting in quicker healing. And it's nature's way of ensuring a mum spends time sitting or lying down, resting and recovering.

This information sheet provides detailed information a mum needs to help get breastfeeding off to a good start, with suggestions for before, during and after a caesarean birth.

Supporting a Breastfeeding Mother (http://www.lllgbbooks.co.uk/shopping/go_shopping/booklets_and_information_sheets/tear_off_pads_of_information_sheets/supporting_a_breastfeeding_mother_-_pad_of_50/)

Families need time to adjust after the arrival of a baby. Even experienced mothers can have difficulties juggling the needs of the new baby with those of older children. At this time a pair of practical helping hands can make a significant difference by allowing a mother time to recover from the birth and establish breastfeeding.

This information sheet offers practical tips for anyone supporting a breastfeeding mum and provides answers to questions supporters frequently ask.

My Baby Needs More Milk (http://www.lllgbbooks.co.uk/shopping/go_shopping/booklets_and_information_sheets/tear_off_pads_of_information_sheets/my_baby_needs_more_milk_-_pack_of_20_folded_a3_sheets/)

Although most mothers are able to produce enough milk for their babies' needs, a mother may have concerns about her own supply. Perhaps she and her baby had a difficult start or were not given the support they needed to establish breastfeeding. Or all may have seemed to be going well until the baby's weight gain pattern faltered. Sometimes well-meaning people sow the seeds of doubt in a mother's mind. And if a baby is fussy, wants to feed much of the time, seems small, or gains weight slowly, it can be easy for a mother to believe she doesn't have enough milk.

This comprehensive A3 Information Sheet from LLLGB is an invaluable tool for helping a mother assess if her baby is getting enough milk and describes in detail the steps she can take should she need to increase her milk production. Where supplements are needed while a mother works to improve her milk supply, My Baby Needs More Milk provides essential information on how they may be given alongside breastfeeding and how to return to full breastfeeding once supplements are no longer necessary.

Breastfeeding for health

Recent research has increased the knowledge of the health risks to both mother and child from not breastfeeding. Babies who are not exclusively breastfed for the first six months have an increased risk of:

•    Gastrointestinal conditions

•    Chest infections

•    Ear infections

•    Obesity

•    Developing diabetes

•    Having a heart attack in later life.

Breastfeeding protects against infection and allergies. Women who breastfeed have a reduced risk of osteoporosis, breast and ovarian cancer and find it easier to return to their normal weight after the birth.

Breastfeeding for well-being

La Leche League believes that breastfeeding, with its many important physical and psychological advantages, is best for both a mother and her baby, and is the ideal way to initiate good parent-child relationships. The loving help and support of the baby's father enables the mother to focus on mothering so that together parents can develop close relationships that strengthen the family and thus the whole fabric of society.

La Leche League has been offering breastfeeding help, support and encouragement to women for over 50 years. We provide monthly support meetings, telephone counselling, leaflets and up-to-date information. For details of local groups visit our website www.laleche.org.uk or phone our national helpline 0845 120 2918. LLL's trained counsellors (Leaders) are volunteers working from home while caring for their own families.
